Firstly, what does creating ‘A Healthy Mix for Life’ mean to you?

Balance. Balance. Balance. I cannot stress enough the need for balance. However, for many people the idea of ‘balance’ is difficult to understand because there is so much information coming at them via the media, social media and interest groups. The best piece of advice I gave myself during my own healing experience was to ‘listen to my body’. My body will tell me what it needs and when. Gut function is the absolute key to self healing the body – in turn the mind and the human spirit becomes nourished and balance is achieved.

What does your day on a plate look like and why do you eat the way you do?

I keep everything simple.

Fruit to break my overnight fast. Yes just fruit. Fruit is jam packed with enzymes, which activate the colon. 4am to midday is the period for elimination of all of yesterday’s waste.

Lunch and my main meal from midday until 8.00pm – the time for ingestion, digestion and absorption – greens accompanied by heaps of natural flavours. All green foods contain protein and as a plant based vegan, I get all my needs from plant food. My recipe books are full of amazingly flavoursome food ideas.

From 8.00pm until after 4am the next morning, I fast and yes this is your sleep time. I do not fast during the day preferring to maintain a ‘trauma-less’ nervous system. Fasting plays havoc with the nervous system and right now my body craves the balance I spoke of earlier along with ease and grace. Oh and apart from liquid magnesium chloride that I put onto my body daily, I do not have the need for supplements. As my gut is functioning properly I extract all I need from the food I eat, which is very light most days. Less is the new more !!!

Living a healthy life doesn’t just mean eating well … how do you keep your mind and body healthy?

From an integrative nutrition POV, I strive to maintain balance in all my external relationships and remove anything which doesn’t ‘serve my personal good and wellbeing’. This might include people who are unusually negative, places, situations and avoiding any experiences I no longer need to have. I am acutely aware other people might want to drag me into their stuff. I physically step back and remain objective.

I meditate using a mantra which I change daily to meet my needs. As a plant based vegan I escape any colds and flu. I have no inflammation in my body so therefore my immune system is strong. Sickness is not an inevitability for me. The media would have you believe otherwise and for this matter I do not watch TV, listen to the radio or read newspapers. My life is enhanced because of these choices. I moderately exercise by keeping active. I abhor organised and mechanical exercise, thus you will never see me in a gym.

Who is your health, wellness or fitness guru and why?

May I have a wee laugh?

I wrote in my ‘Understanding The Divine Gut’ which I published in 2012, that we are our own gurus. I am my own guru. My body will share with me all I need to know from one day to the next. Couple a powerful bio-response to allowing one’s heart to ‘sing its daily song’, and I have all I need within me. Back in the 80’s I tinkered with the India guru thing but at each turn was told to ‘go home – why are you here?’. So I have been ‘home’ ever since. My turning point was a near death experience from nearly drowning in my own gut fluid by way of reflux in my sleep. That night’s experience is etched into my heart because it was then I had to reach deep within to find a solution to avoid my immanent death. I was nano-seconds away from expiring, but by virtue of my ‘self connection’, I narrowly survived to share my story. The body is programmed to heal itself. We all have the capability to ‘get with the program’ – heal our bodies and align our hearts and spirit.

What is your ONE Super Hero food you cannot live without?

PEANUT BUTTER. Yep that’s right, peanut butter. Full of good proteins, fibre, magnesium and potassium. If I don’t have a gluten free bread in the house, I will simply resort to a couple of teaspoons. My ‘go to’ comfort with very real loving childhood memories. Good for people with gut issues, which I had, but hey, old desires die hard.

If you could share with the Raw Blend family one piece of your wisdom, what would it be?

Be aware. Particularly become food aware. Every time you place food near your mouth (or gaggy hole, as my Scottish partner calls it) you have to ask yourself, ‘is this going to kill me or cure me’. Seriously. If you change your food focus to ‘living whole foods’, then you WILL add years to your life and be healthy, happy, productive and PAIN FREE.

We are lucky enough to have you share with us one of your favourite recipes, why do you love this recipe?

Yes from my Let’s Eat RAW recipe book I would have to choose my Cashew Garlic Aioli Mayo.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of raw cashew – soaked over night
  • 3/4 can of coconut cream – Nakula brand is my preference
  • 1 large clove of garlic
  • 1 teaspoon nutritional yeast
  • Salt to taste
  • Juice of a lime

Method

  1. Place all the ingredients into a personal blender and blend thoroughly.
  2. Add more cream or a dash of water if you need to make it flow better.

Note: The lime juice acts as a natural preservative so you can keep this in your fridge for up to 2 weeks. However, this is most unlikely. 🙂

Happy Blending!
