In the summer of 2013, Sergei Boutenko decided to find out how green smoothies affected the performance of athletes. Sergei rounded up 10 endurance athletes and put them on a green smoothie challenge for six weeks. Sergei then documented what happened with his HD video camera. The results of this project were so exciting, you would have to see it to believe it!

Firstly, what does creating ‘a healthy mix for life’ mean to you?
For me ‘A Healthy Mix for Life’ means putting all the puzzle pieces where they need to go. This includes, but is not limited to, eating healthy, exercising regularly, being kind, exercising the mind and getting enough sleep.
What does your day on a plate look like and why do you eat the way you do?
Most days, I start my day with a green smoothie. This is a fast and easy way for me to get my greens and hydrate my body. If necessary, I will also eat some fruit and homemade granola for breakfast. For lunch, I usually have a HUGE salad and some nut pate. Mid day I’ll have a snack of some sort. Then for dinner I like to make a veggie stir fry or have another HUGE salad with something heavier (lentils, quinoa, etc). I’m a routine kind of guy so I stick to this kind of plan pretty much everyday because it helps me to feel awesome.
Living a healthy life doesn’t just mean eating well … how do you keep your mind and body healthy?
I keep my mind and body healthy with lots of exercise and time in nature. As we progress technologically, we spend more and more time in front of screens. I find it very important to balance that time with nature to help our minds and bodies unplug. As for the exercise, I like to have fun when I work out. I accomplish this by switching it up. For the last few months I’ve been working out with kettlebells, playing soccer on a league, trail running and dancing salsa. Now that it’s fall, I’m also going to be surfing a lot more.
Who is your health, wellness or fitness guru and why?
I don’t really believe in guru’s. People are people. We are more or less the same the world around. My healthy and wellness “guru’s” are those folks that walk their talk and get the results that they seek. I’m currently working out with a kettlebell instructor that’s very inspiring.
What is your ONE Super Hero Food that you cannot live without?
Wild edibles! Wild food is better than organic. It grows in its original form the way that nature intended it to. I try to pack foraged plants into as many of my meals as possible.
If you could share with the Raw Blend Family one piece of your wisdom what would it be?
Strive to be more kind. We are all spiritual beings destined for greatness. Kindness and love is the fast lane to that greatness.
